Embodiment Construction

[0030] The methods and apparatus disclosed herein provide an operating system for dual port payload attachment ring compatible satellites. In particular, the system provides a unique and novel approach to achieve desired mission vehicles for larger satellites, intended to be launched as ride-share payloads on payload attachment rings.

[0031] For example, the single-port capacity in the Standard Service Evolved Extended Vehicle (EELV) Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA) ring (manufactured by Moog CSA Engineering) limits rideshare satellite size to a constrained gross weight of 181 kg ( 400 lbs), with a volume of approximately 0.6096 meters (24 inches) x 0.6096 meters (24 inches) x 0.9144 meters (38 inches). These constraints severely constrain the mission utility and longevity of ring-compatible satellites. The disclosed system employs two or more adjacent payload ports (eg, ESPA ports) to split the load and increase the allowable volume of the ride-sharing spacecraft, allowing...

Abstract

The present invention relates to payload attachment ring compatible satellites, disclosing systems, methods and devices for dual port ring compatible satellites. In one or more embodiments, a method for removably attaching at least one spacecraft to a payload attachment ring on a vehicle involves attaching each spacecraft's positioning plate to an effective Two corresponding payload ports of the payload attachment ring. In one or more embodiments, each spacecraft's alignment plate is attached to each of the two respective payload ports via a respective beam mounted to the respective port adapter plate. The method further involves decoupling each spacecraft's positioning plate from two corresponding payload ports of a payload attachment ring on the vehicle by using at least one mechanical actuator on each of said beams.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to payload attachment ring compatible satellites. In particular, the present disclosure relates to dual port payload attachment ring compatible satellites. Background technique [0002] Launch vehicles typically employ payload attachment rings to attach multiple satellites to enable shared launches for multiple satellites. Currently, conventional payload attachment ring designs have very limited capacity to support larger satellites for launch. Larger payload attachment ring designs have been proposed for supporting larger satellites. However, the maximum allowable height of the payload attachment ring depends on the size of the launch fairing of the vehicle. As such, longer payload attachment loops may not be used for all launches. Thus, there is a need for a payload attachment ring solution that can accommodate larger satellites. Contents of the invention [0003] The present disclosure relates to a method, syste...
