[0018] A hemming tool monitoring system and method according to the present disclosure monitors the orientation of the hemming tool as it is used by an operator to hem weatherstripping onto a flange. Additionally, the system and method provide feedback to the operator regarding the orientation of the crimping tool. Thus, the operator can use appreciable feedback to maintain the hemming tool in a certain orientation, rather than relying on subjective feel. Accordingly, the system and method may be used to reduce the number of times weatherstripping is incorrectly hemmed to the flange of a vehicle body, thereby reducing warranty costs and improving customer satisfaction.

Abstract

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a crimp tool angle sensor, a flange section module, and a diagnostic module. The crimp tool angle sensor measures at least one of a roll angle of a crimp tool, a pitch angle of the crimp tool, and a yaw angle of the crimp tool. The flange section module identifies a flange section of a vehicle on which the crimp tool is disposed based on at least one of the roll angle, the pitch angle, and the yaw angle. The diagnostic module determines whether at least one of the roll angle, the pitch angle, and the yaw angle is within a predetermined range.
