Embodiment Construction

[0014] Referring to the accompanying drawings below, first of all figure 1 , an embodiment of a vortex meter for measuring fluid flow rate is indicated generally at 101 . The vortex meter 101 includes a flow tube 103 through which a fluid can flow. Flow tube 103 is suitably configured for installation in a fluid flow line (not shown). For example, process connections 105 (eg, flanges) are on opposite ends of the flow tube 103 for connecting the inlet 107 and outlet 109 of the flow tube to the tube ends in the pipeline. In industry it is also common to use so-called wafer connections (or "sandwich connections") to install flow meters in fluid lines, and the flow tubes can be adapted to wafer connections (or any other type of connection) if desired. Other types of connections could also be used without departing from the scope of the present invention.

Abstract

A vortex meter for measuring the flow rate of a fluid, having a flow tube and a bluff body positioned in the flow tube for dissipating vortices in the fluid as it flows through the flow tube . Vortex flowmeters have sensors in order to detect vortices. The bluff body has a forward facing surface and a wear resistant coating covering the forward facing surface. The bluff body also suitably has a protrusion extending downstream from the forward facing surface. The bluff body suitably has a wear-resistant coating covering at least a portion of the protrusion. In one embodiment, the entire bluff body is completely covered by the wear resistant coating. The inner surface of the flow tube section can also have wear characteristics.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to vortex flowmeters, and more particularly to vortex flowmeters that measure the flow rate of a fluid that may have characteristics that result in a harsh environment within the flowmeter. Background technique [0002] A flow meter can measure the flow rate of a fluid in a pipe or other passage. A fluid may be, for example, a gas or a liquid, and may be compressible or incompressible. One type of flow meter is the vortex flow meter, which measures parameters, including, for example, flow rate, based on the principle of vortex divergence. Eddy current divergence refers to the natural process by which fluid passing over a bluff body (sometimes called a shedding body) causes a boundary layer of slow moving fluid to form along the surface of the bluff body. A region of low pressure is created behind the bluff body and causes the boundary layer to roll up, which successively creates a vortex on the opposite side of...
