Embodiment Construction

[0020] As mentioned above, there may be a tradeoff associated with an increase in the dynamic range of displayable content. For example, as display dynamic range increases and displays become capable of producing lower black levels and stronger glare, the overall perceived image quality may improve. However, during a sudden transition from a series of dark video frames to brighter frames, the viewer's visual system can be subjected to strain. This adverse effect may be caused by brightness jumps (ie, sudden or abrupt changes in illuminance to which the viewer's visual system needs to adapt). Because brightness jumps depend on dynamic range, brightness jumps may not be easily noticeable on SDR displays. However, jumps in brightness become noticeable in HDR TVs and other displays capable of showing extended dynamic range. Brightness jumps are more of a problem when a display is used in close proximity to a viewer's eyes, such as a mobile phone display implemented as a head mou...

Abstract

The application discloses luminance comfort prediction and adjustment. One or more levels of maladaptation are calculated relative to frames of media content having abrupt jumps from periods of low illumination to bright illumination when visual acuity may be lost and / or discomfort may be experienced. These levels of maladaptation may be correlated with subjectively determined levels of perceivedluminance discomfort. Based upon the levels of perceived luminance discomfort that can be derived from the levels of maladaptation, the media content may be adjusted.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to image processing. Background technique [0002] Interest in distributing video or other visual content with high dynamic range (HDR) is growing due to its ability to provide an enhanced viewing experience compared to conventional standard dynamic range (SDR) content. However, content captured in HDR and / or presented on an HDR display may have disadvantages associated with extended dynamic range. For example, the viewer's visual system may become strained during a sudden transition from a dark frame of content to a brighter frame of content. This can lead to viewing discomfort. Contents of the invention [0003] According to one embodiment, a computer-implemented method includes analyzing media content and calculating one or more adaptation states relative to the media content. The computer-implemented method also includes correlating the one or more adaptation states with one or more corresponding percei...
