Ergonomic man-machine interface incorporating adaptive pattern recognition based control system

An adaptive interface for a programmable system, for predicting a desired user function, based on user history, as well as machine internal status and context. The apparatus receives an input from the user and other data. A predicted input is presented for confirmation by the user, and the predictive mechanism is updated based on this feedback. Also provided is a pattern recognition system for a multimedia device, wherein a user input is matched to a video stream on a conceptual basis, allowing inexact programming of a multimedia device. The system analyzes a data stream for correspondence with a data pattern for processing and storage. The data stream is subjected to adaptive pattern recognition to extract features of interest to provide a highly compressed representation which may be efficiently processed to determine correspondence. Applications of the interface and system include a VCR, medical device, vehicle control system, audio device, environmental control system, securities trading terminal, and smart house. The system optionally includes an actuator for effecting the environment of operation, allowing closed-loop feedback operation and automated learning.

Systems and methods for providing an electronic reader having interactive and educational features

The present invention relates to an electronic reader. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for providing an electronic reader having interactive and educational features. Generally, the electronic reader allows a user to view text on a visually perceptible output device (e.g., a screen) and to interact with the electronic reader through a tactile input device (e.g., a mouse). The user selects and, thereby, visually and / or audibly emphasizes words in the text through the use of the tactile input device. In some cases, the electronic reader records and reports the words that the user selects. Additionally, in some cases, pages of text displayed on the visually perceptible output device can be peeled back to reveal additional pages of text.

InactiveUS20050196733A1ReadingElectrical appliancesWork memorySpeech development
A computer program for execution on a computing device is provided to cross-train students in language development skills such as letter-word correspondence, word recognition, vocabulary, and sentence and paragraph comprehension. A set of programs provide an adaptive methodology for training a student in decoding (semantic, syntactic, phonological, and morphological relationships), knowledge of rhymes, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones, spelling, letter-word correspondences, sentence comprehension, grammatical comprehension, working memory, vocabulary, paragraph comprehension, and improved reading comprehension. In each program, students are presented with an animated scene that poses a question, and a set of answers. The set of answers contain a correct response, and a number of incorrect responses or foils. The student advances to more complex levels by satisfying predetermined correct thresholds. Through repetition and intensity, the student's language skills are developed.

System and method for encoding and retrieving visual signals

A method and system are disclosed for encoding signs in a given sign language. The sign typically uses a dominant hand for some signs and a second hand is used for other signs the dominant hand remaining dominant of the two hands. In order to encode the signs into a useful form, each hand has various articles defined. The first article is that of handshape for both hands. The next article is that of palm orientation, with location and movement being the next two articles. A parametric value is associated with each of these particular articles. A combination of the articles, such as an article's concatenation in a parametric value string, allows for the transcription of a particular sign. Using this parametric value or even parts of the parametric value for the combined sign, a desired sign or a group of signs may be identified that closely resembles the particular sign being encoded. From this group of signs, the user can identify the exact sign that is of interest or that matches the sign desired by the user. A unique total parametric value is defined for each sign within the given sign language for matching against any of the articles identified by the user.

Interactive system and method of modifying user interaction therein

Interactive blocks (12, 212) that present changeable individual characterizations (118) and sensory output based on meaningful assemblage of sensed individual characterizations from similar juxtaposed blocks (12, 212) are configured to record their interactions to produce an historic log or both successful interactions that yield a sensory output or failed interactions that produce no logical or meaningful sensory event. Uploading of the historical log (158) permits automated computational assessment of all interactions, with a centralized computing resource dynamically arranged to cause selective download of new content and / or new operating instructions to one or more of the interactive blocks (12, 212) based of identification of trends in the historical record. The new content and operating instructions modifies operation of cooperating blocks to produce different, processor controlled individual characterizations an / or sensory outputs that reinforce learning or identified mistakes arising from inappropriate manipulation of the interactive blocks. The interactive blocks (12, 212) can be realized as physical entities or otherwise in a virtual screen environment, with the sensory output being visual, audible and / or a haptic response.
