The method comprises the following steps: obtaining a first version control file corresponding to a target application; obtaining a second version control file corresponding to the target application; determining whether the target application needs to be updated based on the first version control file and the second version control file; and if yes, obtaining a value of a update mode field in the first version control file, and updating the target application based on the value of the update mode field, wherein the value of the update mode field configured in a server may be set to a first preset value or a second preset value; when the value of the update mode field is the first preset value, aclient can update the application by using an explicit update manner; when the value of the mode field is the second preset value, the client can update the application by using an implicit update manner.
