Problems solved by technology

Traditional container transfer equipment can be cumbersome, difficult to maneuver and tend to be unstable especially when manipulating large and heavy containers
Moreover, conventional container transfer equipment is generally not suitable for close tolerance positioning of shipping containers for the purposes of aligning shipping containers with the carrier portion of the shipping system to facilitate transfer of shipping containers from one shipping system to another

Embodiment Construction

[0041] see first figure 1 , a perspective view of a port facility showing a number of ship-to-shore cranes positioned to unload shipping containers from a container ship in the background. In the foreground, an overhead monorail assembly with suspended vehicles transfers a shipping container from an unloading location on a quay to a desired location in a port facility.

[0042] see next figure 2, frame and saddle system 100 transfers shipping container 102 from an unloading position beneath ship-to-shore crane 110 to one of a pair of vehicles 104a and 104b suspended from overhead monorail assembly 106 capable of gripping and transferring shipping container 102 s position. In addition to ship-to-shore cranes, the frame and saddle system 100 may also interact with rail mounted gantry cranes, rubber tire gantry cranes or fixed overhead gantry cranes. Once lifted onto the vehicle 104a, the overhead monorail assembly 106 transfers the shipping container 102 to the desired locat...

Abstract

A horse-and-saddle apparatus (120) transfers a shipping container (102) from a dockside unloaded position to a transporting position. The apparatus is mounted on transversely spaced rails, and includes a horse member (122) with roller mechanisms (130a, 130b) cooperating with the rails. A saddle member (128) with a mounting frame moves a shipping container mounted upon the horse member transversely(see arrow). A carrier (104) suspended from an overhead monorail (106) is movable along a track extending from the monorail. Once deposited in the saddle mounting frame, the shipping container is urged to a position from which lifting devices raise the shipping container from the mounting frame.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the transfer and movement of containers in port facilities. In particular, the present invention relates to methods for transferring shipping containers from a dockside location or transshipment base / stacking area after unloading from a container ship to a desired location where the shipping container can be transferred to a port facility and other nearby container handling facilities devices and methods. Background technique [0002] About 90% of the world's non-bulk cargo is transported in intermodal containers (ISO containers) placed on ships. When these containers arrive at a port (by land or sea), they must be moved into and out of ships, trains and trucks. [0003] Transferring containers from one mode of transport to another is time-consuming and energy-intensive. Loading / unloading of ships is typically performed on the ground using various mechanical machines such as cranes, trucks, forklifts and straddle car...
