A charging voltage is sampled; a comparison circuit is used for comparing the sampled charging voltage with a preset voltage; when the sampled charging voltage is higher than the preset voltage, a controller outputs a response control signal to a charging control circuit for stopping equalization of the battery pack, so that overvoltage charging is prevented; and when the sampled charging voltage is lower than the preset voltage, the battery pack is kept charged. Through the protection device and method, the problem of overvoltage charging of the battery pack can be effectively solved to ensure that the charging voltage does not exceed a set value, so that the equalization charging safety of the battery pack is ensured.
