Problems solved by technology

However, short and long exposures are recorded at different times with at least a full-frame readout process in between, and as a result, image combination often produces undesired artifacts when the scene is not static

[0055] This paper discloses a system and method for automatic exposure of a spatially multiplexed exposure (Spatially-multiplexed-exposure, SME) high dynamic range (High-dynamic-range, HDR) image sensor and an automatic exposure function using the SME HDR image sensor camera system. Certain embodiments of the disclosed systems and methods have applicability beyond automatic exposure of SME HDR image sensors.

Abstract

An auto exposure method for a spatially-multiplexed-exposure (SME) high-dynamic-range (HDR) image sensor includes (a) retrieving raw image data from an exposure of the spatially-multiplexed-exposure high-dynamic-range image sensor, (b) preprocessing long-exposure pixel values and short-exposure pixel values of the raw image data to remove therefrom long-exposure pixel values and short-exposure pixel values failing to meet one or more quality requirements, (c) synthesizing, into an high-dynamic-range histogram, the long-exposure pixel values remaining after the step of preprocessing and the short-exposure pixel values remaining after the step of preprocessing, (d) deriving a goodness metric from the high-dynamic-range histogram, (e) adjusting at least one of the long exposure time and the short exposure time, based at least in part upon the goodness metric, and (f) outputting the at least one of the long exposure time and the short exposure time, as adjusted, to the spatially-multiplexed-exposure high-dynamic-range image sensor.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 728,660, filed September 7, 2018, and European Patent Application No. 18193264.1, filed September 7, 2018, the entirety of each of these patent applications The contents are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] This application relates to automatic exposure for digital cameras. Background technique [0004] For conventional digital cameras, adjusting proper image exposure is critical to obtaining high-quality images through the camera's image processing pipeline. Overexposure can produce overexposed areas of the image, and underexposure can result in excessive noise levels and possible color artifacts. For professional and high-end consumer cameras, such as digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, there are usually three parameters that are adjusted in the case of automatic exposure: exposure time, analog and / or dig...
