Embodiment Construction
[0024] The present invention provides methods and compositions for preventing blood-sucking insects (blood-sucking) in livestock and for treating thrombosis in mammals. The composition comprises proteins from the salivary glands of the blood-sucking insect Hornfly, C. occidentalis, as described by Yeates et al. (1999) Annu. Rev. Entemol. 44:397-428. Western horn flies belong to the suborder Cyclorrhapha of the order Diptera. Additionally provided is the nucleotide sequence encoding the antithrombin protein. The protein is named thrombostatin, and its main function is to prevent blood clotting by inhibiting the activity of thrombin (factor II).
[0025] The present invention provides a purified protein with antithrombin activity, wherein said protein comprises the amino acid sequence listed in SEQ ID NO:2, SEQ ID NO:5, or SEQ ID NO:7.
[0026] The present invention also provides an isolated nucleotide sequence encoding a protein having antithrombin activity, wherein said prot...
