Abstract

The air bag (8) is installed in the roof of the motor vehicle so as to be deployed in front of the occupant (7) of the vehicle. The airbag is restrained by means of a tear strip (15) within the airbag so that it is initially inflated as a "curtain" in front of the vehicle occupant, the airbag having only a narrow thickness (T). When the tear band ruptures, the air sac takes on a more rounded shape. The airbag is releasably clamped in the recess (9) which initially houses the airbag. When the airbag is fully inflated, the airbag becomes fully out of the recess so that during an accident, the airbag forces the occupant's head backward as the occupant's torso moves forward.
