Problems solved by technology

Furthermore, as the number of gears or sprockets increases, the rear hub and flywheel pairs become complex and expensive to manufacture and install.
Also, as the number of gears or sprockets increases, it becomes difficult to remove the rear wheel from the bicycle frame, or to replace the existing freewheel with a different one

[0087] see Figure 15 , shows a spacer 226 according to a second embodiment of the present invention. This second embodiment is the same as the first embodiment, except that the spacers 26 of the first embodiment are modified in this second embodiment. More specifically, the spacer 226 of this second embodiment is the same as the spacer 26 of the first embodiment, except that the spacer 226 of this embodiment includes an additional longitudinal groove formed in the bore. The description of the rear hub 18 of the first embodiment also applies to this second embodiment, with modifications as described below. Additionally, the spacers 226 are sized and shaped to be used with one embodiment of the rear hub 18 . Therefore, this second embodiment is not intended to be discussed or shown in detail here.

[0088] Spacers 226 are tubular members made of a lightweight rigid metallic material such as cast aluminum, titanium or steel. The spacers 226 are preferably formed as a one-pie...

[0090] see Figure 28 , shows a first part of a hub axle according to a third embodiment of the present invention. This third embodiment is the same as the first embodiment except that the first part 330 has been modified in this third embodiment. Specifically, the first portion 330 includes a modified relying member 339a extending therefrom. The relying member 39a of the first embodiment has been removed in this third embodiment. The description of the rear hub 18 of the first embodiment also applies to this third embodiment, with modifications as described below. Additionally, the first portion 330 and relying member 339a are sized and shaped to be used with the rear hub 18 of the first embodiment. Therefore, this third embodiment is not intended to be discussed or shown in detail here.

[0091] The first portion 330 basically includes a first end section 334, a second end section 336 axially spaced from the first end section 334, and an end section 336 between the first...

Abstract

A bicycle hub includes a hub axle, a hub body, a sprocket supportmember and a spacer. The hub axle has first and second portions threadedly coupled together via a first threaded connection. The hub body has an outer tubular portion and an interior passageway with the first portion of the hub axle rotatably supported therein. The sprocket support member is releasably and non-rotatably coupled to the outer tubular portion and is mounted on the second portion of the hub axle. The spacer is non-rotatably and axially movably supported on the first portion of the hub axle and is threadedly coupled to the hub body via a second threaded connection. The first and second threaded connections are configured such that rotation of the hub axle to release the first and second portions causes the spacer to move axially toward the hub body.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a bicycle hub having a removable flywheel. More specifically, the present invention relates to bicycle hubs having threaded spacers disposed on two-piece axles to allow the sprocket support member to be separated from the hub without having to remove the freewheel from the bicycle's rear fork. Background technique [0002] Bicycles have become an increasingly common form of recreation as well as a means of transportation. Furthermore, cycling became a very common competitive sport. Whether the bicycle is used for recreation, transportation or competition, the bicycle industry is constantly improving the various components of the bicycle. One particular part of the bike that has been extensively redesigned over the years is the rear bike hub. [0003] To be more specific, most bicycles have several speeds. Therefore, the bicycle rear hub usually includes a freewheel. The freewheel includes at least one spr...
