Embodiment Construction

[0039] The present invention relates generally to instant start fuel cells and in particular to Ovonic instant start alkaline fuel cells. The fuel cell has an internal hydrogen reserve (in the stored anode) for immediate start-up (discussed below), and the ability to receive energy from regenerative braking by acting as an electrolyzer (discussed below). The fuel cell has improved efficiency and increased power supply capability compared to conventional fuel cells of the prior art, while significantly increasing the operating temperature range of the cell (-20 to 150°C). The fuel cell is easy to assemble and has the advantage of using proven low-cost production techniques.

[0040] The invention also relates to the anode and cathode of the fuel electrode, and the energy supply system equipped with the fuel cell. Fuel cell anodes include materials with inherent catalytic activity and hydrogen storage capacity. The cathode and anode materials do not include any noble metals an...

Abstract

A fuel cell which has the ability to start up instantly and can accept recaptured energy such as that of regenerative braking by operating in reverse as an electrolyzer. The instant startup fuel cells have increased efficiency and power availability (higher voltage and current) and a dramatic improvement in operating temperature range of about -20 to 150° C.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to fuel cells and in particular to Ovonic instant start alkaline fuel cells. The electrodes for this fuel cell application address the major hurdles in modern fuel cell technology by using materials free of expensive noble metals and operable at ambient temperatures. In particular, the instant start fuel cell of the present invention comprises an anode formed of a hydrogen storage material. The hydrogen storage material not only stores hydrogen, but also has excellent catalytic activity for forming atomic hydrogen from molecular hydrogen, and also has excellent catalytic activity for producing water from hydrogen ions and hydroxyl ions. In addition to its outstanding catalytic capabilities, the material also exhibits superior corrosion resistance to the alkaline electrolytes of fuel cells. These features uniquely allow the present fuel cell to be instantly startable, usable over a wide temperature range (-20 to 150°C), and...
