Problems solved by technology

In fact, even without managing rights, it is very difficult to cryptographically protect streaming media delivered over interfering channels (one exception is [SRTP])
In particular, assume an existing system that provides DRM for content downloads, however there is currently no solution to transparently introduce DRM for streaming into this system

Embodiment Construction

[0105] Description of the preferred embodiment

[0106] Figure 5 Described is the data structure and client view of an instance of DRM for streaming media in accordance with the present invention. Assume now that the client receives a content object 20 and a rights object 2, wherein said object relates to some digital multimedia content transmitted in data packets 22 from the streaming server to the client during the streaming session. How this occurs is described further below.

[0107] The content object contains metadata and a startup description 23 in the form of an SDP description of the type described above containing a media key 24 . As indicated by the bold rectangle 25, the startup description is protected in the form of a key.

[0108] As in the case of download-type DRM, a rights object associated with a content object contains metadata, usage rights, and a content key.

[0109] The client uses the content key provided in the rights object to decrypt the protect...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a device, system and method for managing rights related to streaming media by using a management mechanism based on content objects and rights objects. According to the present invention, the content object contains means for initiating the streaming media, and the rights object contains usage rules defining the rights to use the streaming media. The invention also relates to a method of delivering and protecting digital streaming media. The startup may include a streaming media session description, an SDP description, a URL pointing to the streaming media and a SMIL file. Preview and super distribution are also available. Content objects are delivered in a form similar to downloadable objects in rights management systems for downloads, thereby repurposing the rights management mechanisms of said latter system for rights management in streaming media transmission systems.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to rights management (digital rights management) technology for managing digital content provided via a network, and in particular to a method, device and system for managing rights related to streaming media. Background technique [0002] Digital content or media distribution using modern digital communication technologies is on the rise, gradually replacing more traditional distribution methods. In particular, there is a growing trend to download or stream digital content over a network from a content provider to a client or user, who then or usage rules stipulated in licenses associated with digital content, the content is reproduced using a reproduction device. Due to the cheapness, speed and ease of implementation of this form of content distribution, applications can currently be found for distributing all types of content including audio, video, images, e-books and software, especially mobile Phone-speci...
