Embodiment Construction

[0021] A method and apparatus for creating objects by selective boundary deposition using a solid freeform fabrication system is described herein. More specifically, a method for forming boundary structures using a high precision process and depositing a flowable build material using a low precision process is described.

[0022] As used in this specification and the appended claims, the term "high precision disperser" should be interpreted broadly as any dispersion device configured to perform a high precision process. Alternatively, the term "low-precision disperser" refers to a dispersing device configured to spray material in a low-precision process, and which, in some cases, may spray a continuous stream. Additionally, a single material disperser may be configured to selectively operate as both a high precision disperser and a low precision disperser. "Stream" or "continuous flow" should be broadly understood to include a fluid flow that is not defined by individual drop...

Abstract

A method of producing an object through solid freeform fabrication includes selectively depositing a boundary structure that defines a surface of the object, and depositing a flowable build material (107) within the boundary structure, wherein the flowable build material (107) forms a portion of the object by flowing to the boundary structure.

Description

Background technique [0001] Solid freeform fabrication is a process for fabricating three-dimensional objects. Typical objects that can be manufactured using solid freeform manufacturing include, for example, prototype parts, production parts, models, and operating tools. Solid freeform fabrication is an additive process in which desired objects are described by electronic data and built automatically from base materials. Selective deposition is a common solid freeform fabrication method. [0002] Typical selective deposition methods involve depositing individual droplets of material called voxels at specific locations using a dispersion mechanism. A selective deposition system typically incorporates two different hardenable materials. The first material is used to make the actual desired three-dimensional object, while the second material is a sacrificial material used to build a support structure for the first material. [0003] Several variants of selective deposition e...
