Embodiment Construction

[0028] The present invention will be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which some, but not all embodiments of the invention are shown. Indeed, the invention may be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this application will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Like reference numerals denote like elements throughout.

[0029] figure 1 A bioreactor assembly 10 of one embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIG. Included in the bioreactor system are a plurality of substantially horizontally extending vessels 11 supported in a vertical stack by shelves 12 and adjacent to a plurality of vertically extending lamps 13 . Each container 11 includes a light-transmissive cylindrical wall structure 14 that defines a reservoir 15 for holding medium at a half-full level thereby providing a surface for supporting duck...

Abstract

A bioreactor assembly of the present invention for holding a media and supporting growth of a plurality of plants. The assembly includes a light source and a container having a light transmissive wall structure and defining a reservoir. A major axis of the reservoir is substantially horizontal allowing the reservoir to be filled with media to a partial level and to define a relatively large surface area for support of the plants. The assembly may also include clamps to secure and seal separate wall structure portions of the container together, and end caps to the wall portions, to define an aseptic environment. As another option, the clamps may define openings therethrough that allow passage of various devices for measuring and controlling bioreactor function such as a gas supply nozzle, a gas exit nozzle, an air temperature probe, a pH probe, a sampling drain, a gas composition probe and a media temperature probe.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the use of bioreactors to maintain media and promote the growth of biological material, and in particular to transparent bioreactors for growing biological material requiring light sources, such as aquatic plants. Background technique [0002] Photobioreactors are devices that allow photosynthetic microorganisms to grow in a controlled manner. U.S. Patent No. 5,846,816 issued to Forth ("Forth") discloses a biomass production device comprising a transparent chamber 10 with an inverted triangular cross-section, as in Forth. figure 1 shown. Extending through this chamber is a first conduit 22 having a number of perforations along its length to allow gas to be introduced into the chamber. There is also a pair of heat exchange conduits 26 extending through the chamber connected to a supply of heat exchange medium. [0003] The passage of air through the conduits creates a distinct flow pattern that circulates the liquid i...
