[0075] To aid in the development of corrosion-resistant containers for use as packaging for corrosion-sensitive materials such as automotive parts, three corrosion-resistant materials (in this case vapor corrosion inhibitors) were compared when sprayed to the interior of corrugated packaging , and with untreated containers and only use such as NTIC (Northern Technologies International Corp.) with the trademark Containers sold in commercially resistant plastic bags were compared. Carbon steel (C1020) and aluminum (AL 6061) corrosion coupons were placed in each sealed container in an environmental chamber at 90% relative humidity / 100°F for two weeks and then examined using an optical microscope. The result was that the liquid preservative treatment gave carbon steel a significant improvement in corrosion resistance compared to untreated containers and those coupons placed in airtight plastic bags. Given this exposure, the aluminum coupons did not show any corrosion.

[0092] A one cubic foot corrugated container was obtained to hold the blockage block (BUB) processed according to the following method. The BUB is a laminated structure of three or more walls, multiple layers of corrugated cardboard for shock absorbing automotive parts. In this study, only the upper surface (2.75 inches x 10 inches) of the BUB that was in direct contact with the corrosion coupons was treated.
[0093] Using a conventional paint roller (3 inch wide foam with 3 / 8 inch thick nap) the exposed side of the blockage block (BUB) was subjected to several different chemical treatments at doses measured using a balance. The minimum low, medium and high doses were applied to the top exposed surface of the BUB and then dried overnight under TAPPI standard conditions (50% relative humidity, 73°F). See Table 2 for the dosage of each treatment chemical applied to the BUBs.
