Abstract

The invention relates to a method for the in-line replacement of cylinders in a rolling mill, consisting in: moving a carriage close to a cage; actuating displacement means with which the carriage is equipped such as to extract the used chock-fitted cylinders in order to position same on a replacement chassis of the carriage; moving the carriage away from the cage; moving a shuttle device, which is provided with a first empty exchange chassis and a second exchange chassis bearing new chockless cylinders, to a first position in which the first exchange chassis is aligned with the replacement chassis of the carriage; actuating the displacement means of the carriage in order to transfer the used chock-fitted cylinders of the replacement chassis to the first exchange chassis; aligning the first exchange chassis of the shuttle device with a chock extraction device in order to detach the chocks from the used cylinders; aligning the two exchange chassis of the shuttle device with the chock extraction device in order to couple the chocks to the new cylinders positioned in the second exchange chassis; moving the shuttle device to a second position in which the second exchange chassis is aligned with the replacement chassis of the carriage; actuating the displacement means of the carriage in order to slide the new fitted cylinders from the second exchange chassis to the replacement chassis; moving the carriage forward; and actuating the cylinder displacement means in order to insert new fitted cylinders from the replacement chassis in the associated cage.
