Embodiment Construction
[0031] Embodiments of the invention relate to a battery pack that includes an electrochemical cell that uses a fluid, such as oxygen or another gas, from outside the cell as an active material for one of the electrodes. The battery has a fluid consuming electrode, such as an oxygen reduction electrode. The cell may be an air depolarized cell, a gas assisted cell or a fuel cell. The battery pack also has a fluid manager (such as an air manager) for controlling the flow of fluid to a fluid-consuming electrode (such as the air electrode of an air-depolarized cell and a gas-assisted cell) to extract energy from the cell during high-speed or high-power discharge. The exterior of the battery is provided with a sufficient amount of fluid to minimize fluid entering the fluid consuming electrodes and minimizing water entering or being lost from the battery during periods of low rate or no discharge. The fluid manager includes a user actuated fluid injection initiator for injecting flu...
