Abstract

A surgical instrument (4), a handle (2) for a surgical instrument and a surgical instrument system are described. The surgical instrument and handle include complementary features to ensure a secure connection between the instrument and handle. In one embodiment, the instrument comprises an outer shaft (12), an inner shaft (14) and an operating portion. The outer shaft includes opposing flat surfaces (16) to allow the handle to engage on the flat surfaces. The inner shaft includes a locking surface (26) at its proximal end for engaging a locking mechanism in the handle. In other embodiments, radial holes (18) are provided in the outer shaft of the instrument. It is engageable by an elongated piece in the handle.
