[0015] Example 1 - Effect of Diet on Inflammatory Biomarkers in Arthritic Felines

[0016] This study was performed to evaluate the effect of test foods on the whole blood gene expression profile when fed to felines with degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the extremities. Thirty-one domestic shorthair cats (initial weight: 4.2 ± 1.27 kg, age: 12.1 ± 2.98 years) with lameness and radiographic changes consistent with DJD were included in this study. All felines were fed the control diet for 28 days followed by the test diet. The test foods contained elevated levels of DHA and EPA, methionine, manganese, vitamins C and E, and L-carnitine. Whole blood samples were collected on the last day of feeding the control diet and 14 days after feeding the test diet. Felines with DJD had reduced expression of six genes (INDO, ANXA1, MMP8, CD79a, ODC1, and STXBP2) identified relative to healthy older felines at 14 days after consumption of the test food. Upregulated in DJD. These genes ...

Abstract

The invention relates to methods of diagnosis, control and prophylaxis of inflammation and mitigation of inflammatory conditions, particularly arthritis and joint pain, in felines, comprising measuring particular inflammatory biomarkers. The invention further provides a method to treat or control inflammation comprising administering a diet comprising increased levels of one or more of DHA, EPA, methionine, manganese, vitamin C, vitamin E, and / or L-carnitine.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to methods of diagnosing, controlling and preventing inflammation and alleviating inflammatory conditions, particularly arthritis and joint pain, in felines comprising measuring specific inflammatory biomarkers. The present invention also provides a method of treating or controlling inflammation comprising administering a drug comprising increased levels of one or more of DHA, EPA, methionine, manganese, vitamin C, vitamin E and / or L-carnitine meal. Background of the invention [0002] Degenerative joint disease (DJD) or osteoarthritis (OA) is less recognized in felines than in canines. However, some authors have estimated that the incidence of extremity DJD in feline populations ranges from 16.5% to 64% in older cats. Little is known about the etiology and predisposing factors of feline DJD. Harnessing genomic and protein technologies can help provide insight into the disease process and understanding how therapeuti...
