Abstract

Various exemplary embodiments relate to a method of generating policy and control charging (PCC) rules for managing packet traffic through a network. The method may include: receiving a request message for a PCC rule from a requesting network component; authorizing a set of QoS information based on the requested set of QoS information; generating a PCC rule; and communicating the PCC rule to an enforcing network element. The request message may include the requested set of QoS information and a plurality of flow maps each describing a flow of packets transmitted over the network. The PCC rule may include: a set of authorized QoS information and a plurality of flow descriptions corresponding to each flow mapping. The PCRN may comprise a first interface to receive the request message, a measurement engine, a rule generator, and a second interface to communicate the PCC rules to the implementing network component.
