Problems solved by technology

Unfortunately, however, such antennas typically provide a relatively narrow operating bandwidth determined by the resonance of the multiband antenna structure
Thus, if greater bandwidth coverage is required, additional element area can be added, increasing the size and complexity of the multiband antenna structure

Embodiment Construction

[0021] This disclosure describes, among other things, illustrative embodiments of tunable multi-band antennas in which at least one operating frequency band of the multi-band antenna is independently tunable without affecting other operating frequency bands of the same antenna. Thus, the limited number of resonant sections of the multi-band radiating structure can cover a larger operating bandwidth than would otherwise be possible. This disclosure describes other embodiments.

[0022] One embodiment of the present disclosure includes a multi-band antenna having a common feed port and a first radiating section coupled to the common feed port. The first radiating portion defines a first resonant bandwidth. The multi-band antenna also includes a second radiating portion coupled to the common feed port and defining a second resonance bandwidth different from the first resonance bandwidth. The second radiating element includes: a near-end radiating section coupled to the common f...

Abstract

A system and process that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a multiband antenna as may be used in mobile communications devices. The multiband antenna includes a common feed port (1202) coupled to each of a first radiating portion (1210) and a second radiating portion (1220). Each of the first and second radiating portions defines a respective resonant bandwidth. The multiband antenna also includes at least one adjustable tuning circuit (1224) disposed between physically isolated radiating segments (1222a,1222b) of a respective one of the first and second radiating portions. Adjustment of the tuning circuit alters a corresponding resonant bandwidth allowing the corresponding resonant bandwidth to be tuned independently of the other resonant bandwidth and without affecting performance of the other resonant bandwidth. In at least some embodiments, the tuning circuit can include a tunable phase shifter having one or more components, each having a variable reactance. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to antennas, and more particularly to tunable multi-band antennas. Background technique [0002] Cellular communication devices such as cellular phones, tablet computers, and laptop computers can support multiple cellular access technologies, peer-to-peer access technologies, personal area network access technologies, and location receiver access technologies that can operate concurrently . Cellular communication devices also integrate various consumer features such as: MP3 players, color displays, gaming applications, cameras, and others. Cellular communication devices may be required to communicate on various frequencies and, in some instances, be subjected to various physical and functional usage conditions. [0003] In some instances, such communication devices are required to operate in different frequency bands, commonly referred to as multi-band operation. For example, a cellular communications device ...
