[0024] Existing speech intelligibility systems attempt to emphasize formants in speech, which may include resonant frequencies produced by a speaker's vocal cords that correspond to specific vowels and loud consonants. These prior systems typically employ filter banks with bandpass filters for emphasizing formants at different fixed frequency bands where formants are expected to occur. The problem with this scheme is that the formant positions may be different for different individuals. In addition, the formant positions of a given individual may also change over time. Therefore, a fixed bandpass filter may emphasize frequencies that differ from the formant frequencies of a given individual, resulting in impaired speech intelligibility.
