Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a control strategy for a hybrid vehicle when its electric motor is unavailable, providing a method for controlling an engine in a hybrid electric vehicle. According to the present disclosure, the method includes, in response to the unavailability of the drive motor, commanding engine power equal to the lesser of the first power and the second power. The first power is sufficient to meet the driver's wheel torque request at the current engine speed, and the second power corresponds to the maximum engine torque available at a target engine speed selected to achieve a desired battery state of charge.
