Abstract

A total air temperature sensor includes a probe head, a post, and a turbulence inducing surface. The detector head has an airflow inlet and an airflow outlet. The struts define a leading edge and an opposing trailing edge extending along a longitudinal axis and are connected between the probe head and an opposing probe base. The turbulence inducing surface is defined in the strut aft of the leading edge. The turbulence inducing surface is configured to interrupt a fluid boundary layer passing over the strut to transition from laminar to turbulent flow for moving flow separation towards the trailing edge to reduce noise emissions from the total air temperature sensor .
