Problems solved by technology

[0009] One problem with ladles with conventional hinged lids such as those disclosed by Heyer et al. and Leng et al. is that the hinge brackets on which the hinge pins are carried extend over the edge of the ladle.
Another problem with ladles with conventional hinged lids is that solidification of slag on the edges of the ladle due to pouring and / or tapping of the steelmaking vessel may interfere with full closure of the lid
This changes the position of the lift pins on the top of the cover and prevents proper engagement of the lift pins by the lift assembly

Embodiment Construction

[0025] A ladle 10 according to a first embodiment of the invention is shown in Figure 1 to Figure 4 , while all unnecessary details are omitted for clarity. Ladle 10 is generally of conventional construction and includes a hollow cup-shaped body 12 of frusto-conical configuration with a rim 16 and a substantially flat bottom 14 . The body 12 of the ladle 10 is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed trunnion pins 18 . The common axis of the trunnion pins 18 is located slightly above the center of gravity of the ladle 10 when empty so that the ladle 10 can be suspended or tipped to remove slag, for example as figure 2 and image 3 shown.

[0026] The ladle 10 has a front edge 20 which forms the pouring lip of the ladle 10 . The ladle also includes a rear edge 22 provided with a pair of hinge brackets 24 each carrying a hinge pin 25 for connection to a cover 26 .

[0027] The lid 26 is adapted to close the top of the body 12 of the ladle 10 by being seated on the ri...

Abstract

A removable lid for at least partially closing the top of a metallurgical vessel has a rear end located at the rear edge of the brim of the vessel. The rear end of the lid is removably connected to the vessel by at least one lid pivoting hinge means including a lid pivot axis about which the lid is pivotable away from the brim of the vessel. The lid pivot axis is spaced rearwardly from the rear end of the lid and the rear edge of the brim; and is located in a plane which is below a plane in which the brim is located, such that the lid pivoting means do not interfere with proper positioning of the ladle under the steel making vessel with the lid removed. The lid may comprise front and rear segments connected by hinges.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority and benefit to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 840,115, filed June 27, 2013, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] This invention relates to metallurgical vessels with hinged lids. Background technique [0004] In a typical steelmaking facility, molten steel is tapped from large steelmaking vessels into ladles. A typical ladle may be about 18 feet high and from 10 to 12 feet in diameter at its top. Typically, the ladle is supported and conveyed by a ladle trolley that runs on rails along a path that takes it below the steelmaking vessel where molten steel is tapped from the bottom of the steelmaking vessel into the open top of the ladle. Once the ladle is filled with molten steel, the ladle is conveyed from below the steelmaking vessel to the various metallurgical processing stations and the final pouring station, where the molt...
