Abstract

A computing system architecture that facilitates building application-tailored virtual disks is described herein. An exemplary computing system having such an architecture includes a first plurality of homogeneous storage servers, each of the first plurality of storage servers including a respective first type of data storage device. The example computing system also includes a second plurality of homogeneous storage servers, each storage server of the second plurality of storage servers including a corresponding second type of data store. The application-tailored virtual disk is constructed by mapping a linear (virtual) address space to portions of storage devices across the first and second plurality of storage servers. Storage servers can be accessed over a full bipartite bandwidth network.
