Abstract

Polyolefin compositions useful as molding compositions comprise oligomeric poly(phenylene ether) as an organic filler. The composition comprises specific amounts of polyolefin and oligomeric poly(phenylene ether). The polyolefin can be a polyethylene homopolymer, an ethylene-containing copolymer, a polypropylene homopolymer, a polypropylene-containing copolymer, or a combination thereof. The oligomeric poly(phenylene ether) can be monofunctional or bifunctional. The composition can further comprise a compatibilizer for the poly(phenylene ether) and polyolefin phases of the composition. The compatibilizer can comprise a hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated, or non-hydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene, or a combination thereof.

Background technique [0001] Polyethylene is a versatile and inexpensive plastic that is used in the highest amount of any plastic. Polyethylene has toughness, near-zero moisture absorption, excellent electrical insulating properties, a low coefficient of friction, and is easy to process. Specialty grades of polyethylene include low density polyethylene (LDPE), medium density polyethylene (MDPE) and many others. For example, LDPE is used in food packaging films, including stretch and shrink wrap; in plastic bags, such as grocery bags, laundry and dry cleaning bags; in extruded wire and cable insulation; (closures, closures) and toys.
