Embodiment Construction

[0023] While the disclosure herein is detailed and precise to enable those skilled in the art to practice the invention, the actual embodiments disclosed herein are merely illustrative of the invention that can be embodied in other specific structures. While preferred embodiments have been described, details may be changed without departing from the invention.

[0024] Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are described below.

[0025] Referring now to the drawings and in particular to Figure 1-8 , a non-limiting example of a hand-operated tool 10 incorporating the principles of the present invention is shown having a pistol or gun-shaped housing 12 . Such as figure 1 As shown, the tool 10 has a grip or handle portion 14 , a barrel portion 16 protruding from the handle portion 14 , and a trigger 18 . The trigger 18 is located forward of the handle portion 14 and below the barrel portion 16, where it fits naturally in the user's hand (not shown).

Abstract

A tool (10, 110) configured to tension an elongate cable tie (20) around a wire cable bundle (22) and sever a portion of a tie tail (30) from the cable tie (20). This tool (10, 110) includes a pistol-shaped housing (12) having a handle portion (14) and a barrel portion (16). A slide mechanism disposed within the barrel portion (16) comprises a gripper mechanism (34) configured to grip a tail (30) of the cable tie (20) and a slide (32) configured to move the gripper mechanism (34) in a direction toward an end of the barrel portion (16) and pull the tail of the cable tie (20) through the tie head (28), thereby tightening the cable tie (20) around the wire cable bundle (22). The tool (10, 110) also includes a tensioning mechanism that is configured to halt application of the tension to the cable tie (20) when the tension applied by the slide mechanism reaches a predetermined tension threshold and a cutoff mechanism (156) configured to sever the tie tail (30) from the cable tie (20).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a hand held tensioning and cutting tool for cable ties, and more particularly to a tool for tensioning cables by pulling the cable tie away from the operator of the tool. Background of the invention [0002] Cable ties are used in a wide variety of environments and applications. They can be used, for example, for bundling multiple elongated wires, cables, such as those used in automotive wiring harnesses or other elongated items. Cable ties can also be used to secure slender items to rigid structures or as hose clamps. Such cable ties typically include an elongated tie tail that passes through an integral tie head to encircle the item to be bound, and the cable tie tail is pulled through the cable tie head to secure the elongated item tightly. Bundled in bundles. [0003] Existing cable tie tools require the operator to pull the tail end of the cable tie towards the operator when the tool is activated. The tail is g...
