Abstract

A method of controlling an automated manual transmission system having a transmission and a shifter is provided. The shifter includes at least one of a manual mode and a hold mode, a drive mode, and a low speed mode. The drive mode automatically selects the transmission's default gear and performs all upshifts and downshifts automatically. Manual mode allows the operator to manually select upshifts and downshifts of the transmission. Hold mode allows the operator to maintain the current operating gear. A control determines whether the shifter is in one of a manual mode, a hold mode, or a low-speed mode. Control determines whether the vehicle operating state is outside a predetermined threshold. Regardless of whether the shifter is in one of the underdrive mode, the manual mode, or the hold mode, control operates the transmission in the drive mode based on the vehicle operating state being outside a predetermined threshold.
