Examples of the present disclosure describe the processing of an input understanding system / service. The received input is processed to generate a set of candidates for identifying the received input. The set of alternatives is filtered. Filtering includes ranking the set of candidates and propagating the multiple ranked candidates for additional processing. The propagated alternatives are processed to generate an expanded set of alternatives for the underlying hypothesis based on the received input. The set of alternative extensions is filtered. Filtering includes ranking the candidates of the expanded set and propagating the multiple ranked candidates of the expanded set for additional processing. Alternatives for dissemination of the expanded set are evaluated based on the application of knowledge data read from external sources. Responses to received input are generated. Generation of the responses includes ranking the evaluated alternatives and selecting a response based on the ranked and evaluated alternatives.
