Embodiment Construction

[0026] figure 1 A spectroscopic or photon counting radiation detector 1 is schematically and exemplarily illustrated, capable of detecting individual incident X-ray photons and determining their energy according to predetermined energy ranges or binning. In the illustrated embodiment, the radiation detector 1 is included in a computed tomography (CT) imaging device 2 for generating a three-dimensional image of an object, for medical or other purposes. However, the radiation detector 1 can similarly be used in other applications than CT imaging.

[0027] In addition to the X-ray detector 1, which will be explained in further detail below, the CT imaging device 2 also includes a radiation source 3, such as an X-ray tube, which generates radiation passing between the radiation source 3 and the radiation detector 1, including the An X-ray beam 4 of an examination region 5 of an object. X-ray radiation passing through the examination area is collected by a radiation detector 1 . ...

Abstract

The invention relates to radiation detector for registering incident photons, comprising (i) detection circuitry (202, 206, 207) configured to provide an electric output signal in response to incidentphotons, the output signal comprising pulses having an amplitude indicative of energies deposited in the radiation detector by the incident photons, and (ii) an energy estimating circuit (2081,..., 208N; 2091,..., 209N) configured to detect that the output signal is larger than at least one threshold corresponding to an energy value in order to determine energies of incident photons. The radiation detector further comprises a registration circuit (211) configured to detect incident photons independent of a comparison of the output signal with the at least one threshold. Moreover, the invention relates to a method for detecting photons using the radiation detector.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to spectral radiation detectors. More particularly, the present invention relates to radiation detectors for detecting incident photons and methods of detecting photons using the radiation detectors. Background technique [0002] So called spectral or photon counting X-ray detectors allow to detect incident X-ray photons individually and to determine their energy according to predetermined energy bins (corresponding to specific energy ranges). For this purpose, the detector comprises a direct conversion material that produces a pulsed current signal each time a photon enters the material, where the pulse of current corresponds to an amount of charge indicative of the energy of the photon. The current signal of successive arriving photons is processed in the detector's readout electronics to produce an output signal comprising a train of pulses, where each event (e.g., an incident photon) corresponds to a pulse w...
