The present invention discloses a fault diagnosis method for a reducer based on VMD (empirical mode decomposition) and PCT (polynomial frequency-modulated wavelet transform). The method comprises: selecting the modal component with most obvious features obtained by using the VMD algorithm as input of PCT to obtain a gear time-frequency diagram and a bearing time-frequency diagram respectively; according to the fault frequency and the cycle period on the gear time-frequency diagram, determining the position of a faulty gear for positioning a gear fault source; based on the number of obviously periodic time-frequency bands, giving out a determination result of the severity of the gear fault; and determining the type of the bearing fault according to the cycle period on the bearing time-frequency diagram. According to the method provided by the present invention, through the combination of gear diagnosis and bearing diagnosis, the diagnostic efficiency and the recognition accuracy are improved, and the complete diagnosis of the reducer is realized.
