Embodiment Construction

[0022] The following description relates to systems and methods for taking mitigating action in response to indications of degradation of a jet pump used to transfer fuel from a passive side to an active side of a saddle tank. The system and method can be applied to vehicles equipped with in-vehicle navigation systems, such as in figure 1 The vehicle system depicted here. The systems and methods can be applied to autonomously controllable (such as via figure 2 autonomous vehicle system described here). image 3 schematically shows figure 1 The vehicle system of , further showing a fuel tank including a saddle tank, the fuel system is coupled to an evaporative emission system and to an engine system. Figure 4A to Figure 4B Example driving situations are depicted that may result in fuel being delivered from the passive side of the saddle tank to the active side, depending on how the saddle tank is positioned relative to the vehicle. Figure 5A An example driving maneuver i...

Abstract

The disclosure provides systems and methods for mitigating saddle fuel tank jet pump failure. Methods and systems are provided for enabling a vehicle for which a jet pump that functions to transfer fuel from a passive side to an active side of a saddle fuel tank is degraded, to reach a desired destination by the taking of mitigating action. The mitigating action includes conducting a driving maneuver in response to an indication that the jet pump is degraded, the driving maneuver conducted in order to transfer a desired amount of fuel from the passive side to the active side. In this way, a vehicle may reach a desired destination even under circumstances where the vehicle may otherwise be unable to reach the desired destination.

Description

technical field [0001] The present specification generally relates to methods for controlling a vehicle to perform one or more driving maneuvers to transfer fuel from a saddle tank during various conditions, such as in the event that a jet pump that transfers fuel from a passive side to an active side is degraded. Methods and systems for passive side transfer to active side. Background technique [0002] A vehicle system may be equipped with a fuel system including a bifurcated fuel tank for storing and delivering fuel to an internal combustion engine. For example, the fuel tank may include a reserve tank, or the fuel tank may be configured as a saddle tank for compact packaging without compromising fuel storage. For example, saddle boxes may be used in all wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, where the AWD hardware takes up a lot of the under-vehicle space required to pack a single box. Additionally, saddle tanks can be designed to hold more fuel than standard fuel tanks, making t...
