Embodiment Construction

[0039] The present invention is a new method of designing multifocal optical elements. This approach allows the designer to focus on specific regions of the optical element surface where obtaining satisfactory optical properties is more important. This approach also allows the designer to control the optical performance along the surface curve and in the neighborhood of the curve.

[0040] In the particular case of designing a progressive lens, the invention does not require the division of the lens into three zones: an upper zone for distance vision, a lower zone for near vision and a transition zone connecting the two zones mentioned above. Instead, the entire lens surface is best viewed as a whole.

[0041] The method of the present invention involves a design process with feedback. This method as figure 1 , and will now be described with reference to that figure. The designer specifies the variable values needed in the design process (step 100), and these parameters ...

Abstract

A method for designing a surface of a multifocal optical element, such as a progressive spectacle lens, includes the steps of partitioning a region into triangles, ( tau i) defining a set of functions, each representing a portion of the surface (li) over one of the triangles ( tau i), and optimizing the functions. A further embodiment includes the steps of partitioning a region into polygons (200), and defining a set of functions, each representing a portion of the surface over one of the polygons (202). Continuity constraints for values of the functions and values for the first derivatives of the functions at boundaries of the polygons are dictated. Continuity constraints for values of the second derivatives of the functions at boundaries of the polygons are not required. The functions are optimized subject to the dictated continuity constraints.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a design method of a multi-focus optical element. Background technique [0002] Optical elements are those parts of substantially transparent material that have reflective or refractive surfaces for light, such as mirrors, transmissive mirrors, beam splitters, and collimators. Optical components are used in everything including: telescopes, microscopes, cameras and eyeglasses. [0003] Optical components are characterized by their optical performance and surface optical properties. When incident light passes through the optical element, its optical properties such as astigmatism, optical power, and spectrum indicate how the wavefront of the incident light is deformed as it passes through the optical element. Surface optical properties such as surface astigmatism, surface power, and gradients of surface astigmatism and surface power represent the surface geometry of the optical element. Optical properti...
