Abstract

Example embodiments of intravascular coils having a twisted 8-shaped shape are disclosed. The intravascular coil includes: a first ring; a second ring; and a refractive region in which a portion of the first ring transitions into a portion of the second ring. The second ring rotates about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the first ring to produce a twisted 8-shaped shape. The twisting increases more randomness and variability for the filling behavior of the coil in the blood vessel. The increased randomness and variability enable the twisted 8-shaped coil to better fill the voids of irregularly shaped aneurysms than other conventional embolization coils.
