Problems solved by technology

[0027] In multi-segment printheads like the printheads above, maintaining consistent dot gain and brightness across the overlapping sections of the printhead segments is an issue, and this problem is exacerbated by the misplacement of the printhead segments

Embodiment Construction

[0049] A typical 12-inch printhead width is controlled by one or more print engines / controllers (PECs) (described below), enabling full-page-width printing on A4 and Letter pages. In the existing printing environment, use up to 6 color ink channels, they are:

[0050] CMY, for normal color printing

[0051] K, for printing black text and black content

[0052] IR (infrared), for applications that support marking

[0053] · F (fixer), for high-speed printing

[0054] The print engine / controller that interfaces with the printhead can be implemented using a single chip. The chip contains 4 basic functions:

[0055] Receive compressed page data via a serial interface (e.g. IEEE 1394)

[0056] • Has a print engine that generates pages from compressed data. The print engine must have the following functions: expand the page image, dither the contone layer, composite the black layer onto the contone layer, add infrared markers (optional), and send the resulting image to the pri...

Abstract

A method of preparing print data for a multi-segment printhead in which is established a set of dither matrices for a multi-segment printhead comprised of a plurality printhead chips with end portions overlapped, the set consisting of a lead-in dither matrix associated with a lead in overlap portion, a lead-out dither matrix associated with a lead out overlap portion and a common dither matrix associated with a central portion of the printhead chip. Received print data composited with dither values from the set. The lead-in dither values establish fade-in of one segment and the lead-out dither values establish fade-out of the preceding segment. In each two overlapping segments overlap is characterized in terms of a misalignment and the misalignment is used to generate an offset leading into the common dither matrix.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to printing using a multi-segment printhead, and more particularly to a printhead comprising a set of dither matrices. Background technique [0002] There are many types of printers on the market today. These printers create images with corresponding inks and print pages in a dot-matrix format. Conventional inkjet printers are discussed and described in U.S. Patent No. 6,045,710, filed by inventor Carl Silverbrook, entitled "Self-Adjusting Construction and Fabrication of a Monolithic Integrated Circuit Printhead" its manufacturing process. [0003] Various methods, systems and devices related to the present invention are disclosed in the following co-pending patent applications. These patent applications were filed simultaneously with the present invention by the applicant or assignee of the present invention on May 24, 2000: [0004] PCT / AU00 / 00518, PCT / AU00 / 00519, PCT / AU00 / 00520, PCT / AU00 / 00521, PCT / AU00 / 00523, [0...
