Embodiment Construction

[0027] A. Comprehensive overview

[0028] The present invention is an apparatus and method for maintaining the quality of sleep of a patient undergoing therapeutic treatment. The present invention monitors and interprets physiological signals and concurrent respiratory events to detect the onset of arousal. Once the onset of arousal is determined, the present invention determines the adjustments needed for the operation of the therapy device to avoid and minimize arousal.

[0029] Such as figure 1 As shown, in one embodiment, the present invention comprises one or more sensors 10 for detecting physiological parameters of a patient, a controller 12 for monitoring and determining arousal based on the physiological variables obtained by the sensors, and a controller 12 controlled by the controller 12. The gas delivery device 14. Sensor 10 may be a combination of one or more devices capable of monitoring physiological parameters used by the present invention to determine the ...

Abstract

The present invention monitors and interprets physiological signals and spontaneous breathing events to detect the onset of arousal. Once the onset of arousal is determined, the present invention determines adjustments that are needed in the operation of a therapeutic device to avoid or minimize arousal s. In one embodiment, the present invention includes one or more sensors (10) which detect a patient's physiological parameters, a controller (12) which monitors and determines the onset of arousal based on the physiological variables received from the sensor (10), and a therapeutic treatment device which is controlled by the controller. The sensor can be a combination of on e or more devices which are able to monitor a physiological parameter that is used by the present invention to determine the onset of arousal or the onset of a sleep disorder. The sensors can be integrated into one unit or may operate independent of the others.

Description

technical field [0001] Generally, the present invention relates to the field of therapeutic treatments. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for providing therapeutic treatment to a patient without adversely affecting sleep. Background technique [0002] Many therapeutic treatments are administered to patients while they are asleep or about to fall asleep. Although these treatments can achieve their intended curative effect, these treatments often seriously affect the patient's sleep quality while receiving these treatments. These treatments often interrupt the patient's normal sleep progression, causing brief arousals. Although these arousals do not cause the patient to wake up, they often cause the patient to exit from a deeper sleep stage or a higher quality sleep state. Often the patient cannot re-enter this deeper sleep stage for a relatively long period of time. [0003] In some instances, therapeutic treatment can result in mul...
