Peripherals and data processing systems are disclosed which can be configured to interact based upon sensor data. In one embodiment, a peripheral, which is configured to be used with a data processing system, includes an interface to couple the peripheral to the data processing system, and at least one sensor, such as a proximity sensor, to sense a user of the peripheral, and a processor coupled to the interface and to the at least one sensor, wherein the processor configures the peripheral in response to data from the at least one sensor. The peripheral may communicate sensor data from its sensors to the data processing system, which may be a wireless PDA, and the data processing system analyzes the sensor data from its sensors and from the peripheral's sensors to decide how to configure the peripheral and/or the data processing system based on the sensor.

The Residential Communications Gateway (RCG) is a broadband communications device that combines all voice, data and video communications to and from a typical residence or small business for transmission over a single, or a plurality of Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) lines separately or in conjunction with, a wireless broadband backbone. The RCG does this by employing packetized data with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies combined with RF communications technologies. A method and system is disclosed for allowing the sharing of one or more system resources between multiple devices. In one embodiment, a requesting device transmits a resource access request to a target device using a near-field communication (NFC) protocol. The target device responds by using the NFC connection to return a listing of resources available for sharing to the requesting device. The requesting device may select one or more of the available resources and establish an appropriate connection to access the selected resource or resources. In one embodiment, the requesting device may lack external network connectivity capabilities while the target device includes wi-fi connectivity as a shared resource. Accordingly, the requesting device may access external network of the target device via the target as a conduit.

Disclosed invention is a consumer telephone system (the iCord telephone) that globally extends the range of cordless telephones by using the Internet to securely connect a cordless base station to multiple cordless handsets/phones. An iCord phone user can receive or make PSTN calls on the same iCord base station from anywhere that has Internet connectivity for one's iCord handset. The iCord system can page and carry on a VoIP conversation with any iCord handset registered on the same iCord base station without incurring PSTN telephone call charge. In addition, an iCord handset can simultaneously register and securely connect with multiple iCord base stations over the Internet. Thus an iCord handset user, from anywhere over the Internet, can receive or make PSTN phone calls from, for example, either office, home or friend's iCord base stations with the same iCord handset. Multiple iCord base stations can also set up as a private phone network over the Internet. Such that an iCord handset only needs to register with one iCord base station and can access any other base stations within the same private network. The iCord phone invention is also applicable to VoIP service that supports the use of cordless phones to receive or make VoIP calls.

Network entities such as an access device and a gateway analyze messages exchanged during a communication session to identify information items of interest such as, for example, email addresses, universal resource locators, file paths, and attachments. References to and/or the contents of the identified information items may be stored in a database that associates the identified information items with the participants of the communication session. A system and method are disclosed for reducing interference in simultaneous wireless LAN (WLAN) and wireless personal area network (PAN) signal handling in mobile wireless terminals having both a WLAN and a PAN interface. The wireless terminal includes a first transceiver operating in the PAN network in a communications band and a first communications protocol transmitting first data units. The wireless terminal also includes a second transceiver operating in the WLAN network in substantially the same communications band and a second communications protocol transmitting second data units. The wireless terminal further includes a controller coupled to the first and second transceivers, assigning a higher transmission priority to the second data units than to the first data units when transmission of the second data units overlaps a first occurring transmission of the first data units, to abort transmission of the first occurring data unit. The controller assigns a higher transmission priority to the aborted first data unit than to the second data units when transmission of the second data units overlaps the retransmission of the aborted first data unit, to transmit the aborted first data unit.

Embodiments of the invention provide novel solutions, including systems, methods and/or software, for handling calls in a dual-mode VoIP/cellular environment. Merely by way of example, some systems can be configured to determine whether to use a VoIP system or a cellular system to handle a particular call, and/or to transition a call from one network to the other network. Other systems can be configured to substitute a public number (which might be, for example, a VoIP number) for a private number (which might be, for example, a cellular number) when routing a call originating from a dual-mode phone on a cellular network. Further systems can be configured to allow a VoIP system to serve as an anchor for calls originated and/or delivered on a cellular system, for instance to facilitate a transition between cellular and VoIP service during a call.

Methods and apparatus for synchronizing Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) communication within a multi-mode radio. A multi-mode radio can support communication with a WLAN and at least one other wireless communication system. The multiple systems can be distinct and asynchronous. Transmitting, or attempting to transmit, over a WLAN communication link can result in interference that degrades the sensitivity of a receiver in another communication system, or that interferes with a transmission in another communication system. The WLAN transmissions can be synchronized to operation in another communication system by generating a signal that can be coupled to a collision avoidance system in the WLAN transmitter. The signal can operate to cause the WLAN transmitter to reschedule the transmission to another time such that the resources of the multi-mode radio are conserved and the WLAN interference is minimized.
