Embodiment 1

[0482] Example 1: Reinforcement

[0483] Instron method

[0484] Hair fibers were placed in water prior to measurement with an Instron tensile tester. Load unit 10N, load range 10%, speed 30mm / min, gauge length 15mm.

[0485] The energy required to elongate a single hair fiber by 2% and 20% was recorded for 50 fibers and averaged.

[0486] Material

[0487] perm solution

[0488] 8% thioglycolic acid, pH adjusted to 8 with ammonia solution

[0489] Perm Neutralizer

[0490] 2.5% hydrogen peroxide

[0491] bleach solution

[0492] 9% hydrogen peroxide, 1% ammonium persulfate, pH8.3

[0493] Hair Straightening (Relaxing) Solutions

[0494] 2.5% Sodium Hydroxide

[0495] relaxation neutralizer

[0496] 9.5% citric acid

[0497] Perm steps

[0498] 1. Hair fibers (~4 cm, length) from the same source (Caucasian) were soaked in the waving solution for 3 hours.

[0499] 2. Place in the neutralizing solution for 30 minutes and air dry.

[0500] 3. Place in a solution co...

[0531] Example 2: Substantivity of Conditioner on Hair

[0532] Keratin shampoo preparation weight %

[0533] Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (28%) 25.0

[0534] Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate 20.0

[0535] Cocamidopropyl Betaine 8.0

[0536] Preservatives 0.3

[0537] Keratin fragment 0.5

[0538] Sodium chloride appropriate amount

[0539] Water qs to 100%

[0540] experiment procedure

[0541] Use 2-3g hair samples. The experiments were performed in duplicate.

[0542] The samples were shampooed prior to use to remove residual conditioner.

[0543] The samples were either undamaged or subjected to multiple perming or bleaching steps.

[0544] The samples were equilibrated at 50% RH and weighed accurately.

[0545] Keratin fragments are applied to the sample either from an aqueous solution or as part of a shampoo formulation (at a concentration of 3.0 ml / sample)

[0546] The treatment solution was spread over the sample with fingertips, allowed to absorb for 1 minute, a...

Embodiment 3

[0553] Embodiment 3 insulation effect

[0554] Experimental procedure

[0555] Use 2-3g hair samples. In the experiments performed, each treatment was replicated twice.

[0556] The samples were washed with a high surfactant (unconditioned) shampoo prior to use to remove residual conditioning agent.

[0557] The samples were either undamaged or subjected to multiple perming or bleaching steps.

[0558] The samples were equilibrated for 24 hours at 50% RH and weighed accurately.

[0559] The samples were equilibrated for 24 hours at 73% RH and weighed accurately.

[0560] Calculate the difference in weight due to increased humidity (without protein treatment).

[0561] Samples were treated in duplicate with aqueous solutions containing keratin fragments or shampoos containing keratin fragments (as described above).

[0562] The samples were equilibrated at 50% RH for 24 hours and weighed.

[0563] The samples were equilibrated at 73% RH for 24 hours and weighed.

Abstract

The application describes a range of personal care products that include a keratin protein fraction. The fraction may be intact or hydrolysed. It is preferably S-sulfonated. The content of the fraction may range from 0.001% to 50%. In most formulations its content will be less than 1% although in certain products such as nail care products, the content will be higher. A wide range of personal care products are described including shampoos, body gels and lotions, conditioners, creams and cosmetics generally.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to personal care formulations comprising keratin and their use in cosmetics. Background of the invention [0002] Proteins and their derivatives are widely used in personal care formulations, including those for hair, skin and nails. As components of personal care formulations, proteins perform many functions including conditioning, film forming, humectants and lubricants. Most commonly used proteins are hydrolyzed to provide sufficient solubility for incorporation into formulations. This is especially true for keratin, which is inherently insoluble due to crosslinks associated with the characteristically high cysteines present in the protein. Many examples of the use of hydrolyzed proteins, including keratin, in personal care formulations are known in the art. [0003] WO9851265 discloses the use of hydrolyzed proteins and their derivatives, especially those high in sulfur, in formulations for the protection of hair...
