Use of matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors in skin care

InactiveUS20090068255A1Preventing and reducing of and sun damageImprove skin appearanceBiocideCosmetic preparationsWrinkle skinDisease
The application of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors to the skin inhibits the degradation of proteins found in the skin including collagen, elastin, and other basement membrane and extracellular matrix protein. MMP inhibitors may be used in both cosmetic compositions and pharmaceutical compositions for application to skin. MMP inhibitors are formulated with a cosmetically suitable vehicle or pharmaceutically acceptable excipient for application to the skin as creams, lotions, ointments, solutions, face masks, etc. As cosmetics, the inventive MMP inhibitor compositions are applied to the skin to prevent or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation changes, loss of elasticity, or other effects associated with aging or sun damage. As pharmaceuticals, the inventive MMP inhibitor compositions may also be applied to the skin to treat or prevent a skin disease (e.g., proliferative disease, inflammatory disease).

Apparatus and method to apply substances to tissue

Methods and apparatuses to apply substances to a biological tissue are described. The tissue having an target below a surface is stretched to provide openings in a surface. Stretching forces a material from the target onto the surface. A first substance may be applied while stretching to promote cleaning the tissue. A second substance may be applied to the surface. Energy may be applied to the tissue. Then the tissue is relaxed to draw the second substance through the openings into the tissue. The tissue may be stretched by applying a negative pressure, and relaxed by removing the negative pressure. The first substance may be an abrasive material. The second substance is a medicine, a moisturizer, a lotion, or any combination thereof. The second substance may be applied to the biological tissue using a positive pressure. The apparatus to apply substances may be a handheld device.

Personal care compositions with color changing indicator

The invention describes a composition for use in disinfecting a surface for personal use, such as a public restroom facility or telephone. The composition and delivery of the composition provides for the placement of a thin layer of disinfectant which includes a acid-base indicator. The acid-base indicator disappears as the thin layer effects the germicidal activity of the disinfectant. The composition is also rapidly drying, so that the acid-base indicator disappears as well as the disinfecting composition leaving the surface dry. The invention also relates to use of the compositions in a lotion, such as a sunscreen. Use of the acid-base indicator provides a method to visualize where the lotion is applied by color, with the color then later dissipating.

Zinc salt compositions for the prevention of dermal and mucosal irritation

The addition of low concentrations of combinations of water-soluble organic salts of zinc to gels, creams, lotions or ointments can increase the ability of these products to reduce or prevent exogenous irritants from causing irritation of the underlying substrate. The addition of low concentrations of combinations of water-soluble organic zinc salts to these gels, creams, lotions or ointments also can reduce the irritation of skin or mucous membranes caused by the addition of potentially-irritating substances such as spermicides, microbicides, fungicides or other therapeutic agents to the gel, cream, lotion or ointment. The advantages of this anti-irritant approach over others, which generally employ high concentrations of single zinc salts, are the reduced potential for zinc toxicity, the reduced potential for toxicity related to zinc itself, and the preservation of the desirable biological properties of potentially-irritating therapeutic substances added to the gel, cream, lotion or ointment.

Hydroxy acids based delivery systems for skin resurfacing and anti-aging compositions

This invention relates to in-situ preparation of the derivatives of various hydroxy acids (HA), such as alpha-(Alpha) Hydroxy Acids (AHA), beta-(Beta) Hydroxy Acids (BHA), and Poly-Hydroxy Acids (PHA) with certain skin beneficial organic hetero-atom bases and their application in skin resurfacing (exfoliation), and in the synergistic treatment and regulation of topical disorders of skin such as skin aging, wrinkles, acne, rosacea, age-spots, canker sores, striae distensae (stretch marks), pimples, skin redness, and dry skin conditions of cracking, flaking, and scaling. Most HA derivatives produced by the in-situ method do not cause skin irritation and skin redness effects that are commonly experienced with AHA and BHA, yet there is no loss of their skin beneficial effects. These compositions can be traditional water and oil emulsions, liposomes, suspensions, colloids, solutions, masks, muds, serums, sprays, gels, lotions, creams, cleansers, and anhydrous systems, thus offering a wide choice of formulations to meet their consumer appeal and acceptance requirements.
