Embodiment Construction

[0030] FIG. 1 shows a land vehicle, in this example an automobile 10 having front doors 12 and rear doors 14 . The front door 12 is hinged at the front end 16 and includes a latch 18 disposed below the beltline 20 at the rear of the door. The vehicle door 12 includes a door frame 22 and a window pane 24 . A retaining device 26 is provided in the door frame 22 above the belt line 20 and is actuated by an actuator system 28 (which is located below the belt line), as will be described in more detail below.

[0031] The latching system 8 basically comprises a latch 18 , a retaining device 26 , and an actuator system 28 .

[0032] The latch 18 is a conventional self-locking latch, so it will only be briefly described.

[0033] FIG. 2A shows a component view of the latch 18 including a latch base 31 mounted on the vehicle door 12 . The latch 18 includes a latch bolt in the form of a rotating pawl 32 pivotally mounted on a pivot 33 . The rotary pawl 32 includes a socket 34 for re...

Abstract

A latch system for an aperture closure including a latch, an auxiliary retention device remote from the latch, an engaging member remote from the auxiliary retention device and a transmission path operably connecting the engaging member with the auxiliary retention device, arranged such that moving of the aperture closure from an open position to a closed position causes the latch to move to the closed position and causes movement of the engaging member to cause the transmission path to move the auxiliary retention device to a closed position.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a latch system for releasably retaining an opening closure, such as a vehicle door, in a closed position. The present invention may be used with the doors of land vehicles such as cars, trucks, vans and the like. Background technique [0002] Known automobiles (motor vehicles) include a passenger door that is hinged at the front and has a single self-engaging latch at the rear of the door, allowing the door to be held in a closed position. Typically, the latch is located in the middle of the door but below the door waistline (beltline). While this arrangement is satisfactory for keeping the doors closed under normal operating conditions, in the event of a road accident, the portion of the door away from the hinges, as well as the latch, could deform inwards and endanger occupants. [0003] Latches are usually a rotating pawl construction where the pawl is held in place by a rotating pawl. The latch is self-engaging, ...
