Problems solved by technology

While storage racking systems can withstand vibrations caused by low or moderate levels of seismic force, larger levels of seismic force may cause damage to the storage racking system, or may cause items or materials to be removed from the shelves or panels of the storage racking system on which they are stored. fall

Embodiment Construction

[0043] Referring to the drawings, reference numerals are used to designate the same or corresponding parts throughout the various embodiments and figures shown and described. In particular embodiments, corresponding parts are indicated by appending a subscript letter. Variations of corresponding parts shown in the figures are also described. It should be understood that general changes in the embodiments may be interchanged without departing from the invention.

[0044] Figure 1 shows a typical four-post vertical frame storage rack system equipped with a storage rack vibration isolator 20a described in detail below. Every storage rack system has a natural frequency depending on how the structure is designed and manufactured. The natural frequency of a storage rack system is also related to its strength and provides information on how the storage rack system will respond during a seismic event. Vertical frame storage rack systems, typically not equipped with storage rack vib...

Abstract

A storage rack system to be installed on a floor has a plurality of columns, is more flexible in a down aisle dimension than in a cross aisle dimension, and has at least a first column and a second column adjacent one another in the cross aisle dimension. A storage rack vibration isolator for use with the storage rack system comprises at least one seismic vibration absorption and dissipation structure constructed to be located primarily between the first and second columns to reduce the storage rack system's natural frequency in at least the cross aisle dimension. The seismic vibration absorption and dissipation structure includes a first member connectable to the storage rack system and a second member connectable to the floor. At least one column support assembly is mountable to at least the first and second columns to enable the columns to move with respect to the floor. A structure limits the movement of the first and second columns to substantially the cross aisle dimension.

Description

[0001] This application claims U.S. Provisional Application 60 / 670,474, filed April 11, 2005 and U.S. Provisional Application 60 / 762,908, filed January 27, 2006, and U.S. Provisional Application 60 / 785,028, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0002] Storage racking systems in business and industry are designed to hold various quantities of items and materials of varying sizes, shapes and weights. Because of the varying configuration of items and materials, storage shelving systems typically include a series of interconnected steel columns, each of which rests on a floor, such as a large concrete floor. A crossbeam is usually installed between a pair of adjacent pillars. Racks or panels mounted between pairs of beams typically support stored items or materials. The columns bear the weight of the articles or materials being stored and transfer this weight to a base at the lower end of each column and from there to the ground on w...
