Embodiment Construction

[0044] Several embodiments of the present invention are described in more detail below to further understand the present invention and its advantages and possible implementations. The invention is not limited to these illustrated embodiments. The described embodiments include methods, apparatus and computer programs for subscription matching in a publish / subscribe communication environment. Activation and / or deactivation events are associated with subscriptions and are used to control when subscriptions are activated. Avoid traditional subscription matching for inactive subscriptions.

[0045] Figure 2 shows a simple publish / subscribe messaging network in which the present invention can be implemented. Such networks are known in the art. A set of publishers 10, 20 running on respective data processing systems 30, 40 may be able to publish messages that may be received by multiple subscribers 90, 100, 110 by the publishers sending messages to an intermediate publish / subscrib...

Abstract

Methods, apparatus and computer programs for flexible topic identification in a publish / subscribe communications network. Publishers and subscribers are able to specify their intentions regarding the topic classification schemes to be used by a publish / subscribe broker during subscription matching, and the broker is responsive to the specified intentions of either or both of the publisher or the subscriber to invoke a respective subscription matching component. The invoked matching components each implement a subscription matching process that is consistent with a specified topic classification scheme.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to communication within a data processing network, and in particular to an apparatus, method and computer program implementing a publish / subscribe communication paradigm. Background technique [0002] Within a messaging network, messages may be passed from one data processing system to another through one or more "message brokers," which provide routing and, in most cases, formatting and other services. Typically, agents are located at communication hubs within the network, although agent functions may be implemented at various points within a distributed agent network. [0003] Many message brokers support the publish / subscribe communication paradigm. This involves a publisher sending a communication that can be received by a group of subscribers who have registered the type of communication they are interested in receiving, usually without publishing an application that needs to know which subscribers are interested. P...
