Embodiment Construction

[0022] Methods and apparatus for detecting a fault condition in a power supply are disclosed. In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a clearer understanding of the present invention. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art that such specific details need not be employed to practice the present invention. In other instances, well-known materials or methods have not been described in order to avoid obscuring the present invention.

[0023] Reference throughout this specification to "one embodiment," "an embodiment," "an example," or "an example" means that at least one embodiment of the invention includes a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the embodiment or example . Thus, appearances of the phrases "in one embodiment," "in an embodiment," "in an instance," or "in an instance" in various places throughout this specification are not necessarily all referring to the sa...

Abstract

A controller includes a fault detector and a control. The fault detector is to be coupled to a feedback circuit of a power converter to detect a fault condition in the power converter in response to an input voltage of the power converter. The control is coupled to the fault detector and is to be coupled to control the switching of a power switch to regulate an output of the power converter. The control is coupled to inhibit the switching of the power switch in response to the fault detector detecting the fault condition during the switching of the power switch.

Description

[0001] References to earlier applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 922,125, filed April 6, 2007, entitled "Method and Apparatus for Power Converter Fault Condition Detection." [0003] This application is related to co-pending Application No. ## / ######, filed on XX, entitled "Method and Apparatus for Sensing Multiple Voltages from a Single Terminal of a Power Converter Controller" U.S. non-provisional application. technical field [0004] The present invention relates generally to power converters, and more particularly, the present invention relates to control circuits for regulating the output of power converters. Background technique [0005] Many electrical devices, such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), laptop computers, etc., are powered by relatively low voltage DC power sources. Since power is typically delivered through a wall outlet as high voltage AC power, a device is required to conver...
