Embodiment Construction

[0019] The present invention provides a method of treating cancerous areas in the breast using stereotaxic radiosurgery. The invention also provides an apparatus for use in said method. The methods and devices of the present invention are believed to offer potential advantages over current treatment methods, including breast conservation therapy. Potential advantages include, but are not limited to, being essentially noninvasive, painless, and potentially eliminating radiation therapy in the vast majority, if not all, of early breast cancer treatment, (by reducing treatment time from 7 to 10 weeks to hours) Improved quality of life, no scarring, reduced radiation therapy to noncancerous tissue by eliminating invasive surgery and subsequent radiation therapy, easily repeatable, and cost-effective.

[0020] Stereotaxic techniques are thought to achieve an accuracy of about 1 millimeter. Radiosurgery for breast cancer inevitably delivers large radiation doses beyond the target ...

Abstract

A method of treating a cancerous region in a breast of a patient comprising (i) imaging the breast in a three-dimensional coordinate system, (ii) stereotactically determining the location of the cancerous region in the breast, (iii) optionally determining the volume of the entire cancerous region to be treated, and (iv) while maintaining the breast in a three-dimensional coordinate system that is identical to or corresponds with the three-dimensional coordinate system used in (i), noninvasively exposing the cancerous region of the breast of the patient to a cancer-treatment effective dose of radiation; and equipment for use in such a method.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), radiation, stereotaxic radiosurgery, and breast cancer. In particular, the present invention relates to methods and devices for image-guided stereotaxic radiosurgery ablation of intramammary cancerous regions using gamma rays. Background technique [0002] According to statistics from the American Cancer Society, in the United States, breast cancer is the most susceptible malignant tumor among women, with more than 200,000 newly diagnosed cases every year (Jemal et al., Cancer J.Clin.56: 106-130 (2006) ). Mammography and other imaging modalities have undergone major improvements over the past few decades. As a result, more patients are diagnosed earlier in the disease, making breast-conserving therapy (BCT) the treatment of choice. [0003] Compared with mastectomy, breast-conserving therapy provides a more cosmetic result and reduces the patient's psychological and emotional trauma ...
