Problems solved by technology

Providing individual optics for each LED is expensive and also makes the design of the assembly difficult, especially if it is desired to provide a light assembly that can be easily adjusted or modified to be used in a variety of different applications
Additionally, the number of LEDs required to meet illuminance specifications and the required spacing between adjacent LEDs can result in very large lamp assemblies

Abstract

A lighting device comprising a plurality of LEDs and optics arranged relative to the LEDs to redirect light emitted from the LEDs towards a target plane. The center of each LED is located along the perimeter of the bounding plane and intersects the LED curve coplanar with the bounding plane. The optics include light redirecting surfaces that deviate from the LED curve. A light redirecting surface cooperates with each LED and is formed to redirect light emitted from the LED curve in a direction that deviates from a perpendicular to the target plane by an angle of less than 90°. A method for designing a lighting device for illuminating a target plane is also disclosed.

Description

[0001] References to related applications [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of co-pending U.S. Patent Application No. 12 / 021,262, filed January 28, 2008, which was in turn filed July 16, 2007 Continuation-in-Part of co-pending US Patent Application Serial No. 11 / 778,502, each of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] When lighting a parking lot, street, building interior, or other large area, it is often desirable to provide a substantially uniform illuminance over the target area. Designers of parking lots, streets, and buildings often specify the minimum illuminance (lumens per square foot or square meter) required for the entire target area. Illuminance at locations on the target area that exceed the specified minimum is considered wasted illuminance. It is desirable to change the direction of light directed towards areas beyond the minimum illumination to reduce the amount of energy required to illuminat...
