Abstract

The invention relates to a ball screw assembly (10) for an actuator. In one embodiment, a ball screw includes a ball nut assembly (110) having a viewing port (70); a ball screw (30) disposed within at least a portion of the ball nut assembly (110); in the ball screw (30) an inner rod (40) disposed along the longitudinal axis, the inner rod (40) having an enlarged end; and a compression mechanism, such that at least a portion of the compression mechanism is disposed at the enlarged end (42) and the ball screw (30). In another embodiment, the assembly is configured such that the compression mechanism provides a force for moving the visual indicator (60) toward the viewing port (70) when the inner rod (40) is in a fault condition. In another embodiment, in addition to or alternatively to the viewing port (70), the assembly includes a proximity sensor (118) to detect malfunctions.
