Embodiment Construction

[0039] The present invention relates to the detection of defects in metallic structures by eddy currents using an on-board coil array. The basic principle of the invention consists in analyzing the signal emitted by the coil by comparison with edge effects.

[0040] Figure 1A and 1B A device according to the invention is schematically shown which can be used to perform a non-destructive testing method using eddy currents to detect defects in metallic structures of an aircraft.

[0041] The device 1 comprises: a coil array 5; excitation means 7 for exciting the coils; measuring means 9 for measuring electrical signals representing eddy currents; calculation or data processing means 11 for processing and analyzing the electrical signals; and storage means 13, Data or code instructions used to record computer programs.

[0042] The coil array 5 includes a plurality of coils 511 to 536 connected in parallel to each serve as an eddy current sensor. It should be noted that depen...

Abstract

Non-destructive testing of structures in aircraft is disclosed. The invention relates to a non-destructive testing method using eddy currents to detect flaws in a metal structure (3) by means of a coil array (5) attached to a surface (31) of said structure (3), said method comprising: exciting said coils; measuring electrical signals of said coils indicative of said eddy currents; comparing the electrical signals of each of said coils with a specific electrical signal emitted by at least one coil mounted on an edge of said surface; and estimating the variation over time of the electrical signal of each coil (511 to 536) by taking as a reference the edge effect corresponding to said particular electrical signal emitted by at least one coil mounted on the edge of said surface, said The degree of change indicates whether the defect is present in the structure.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to the technical field of non-destructive testing for detecting defects in metallic structures, more particularly for detecting cracks in areas of aircraft structures that are inaccessible or only difficult to access. Background technique [0002] Regular inspections of structural or mechanical parts of aircraft, especially to detect possible cracks, so that appropriate repairs can be made if necessary. [0003] A non-destructive testing system is known from patent application EP2037261 comprising a probe consisting of a plurality of stationary coils attached to the surface to be tested. Subsets of these coils are sequentially fed and connected in series to simulate a continuous scan of the surface to be inspected by the probe. The coils are initialized in air prior to their installation on the surface, and the signals from a subset of the coils are compared with each other to detect surface cracks in the structure. [0004] How...
